Zwar gab es mit dem Galaxy Xcover 4S bereits 2019 eine runderneuerte Variante des kleinen Outdoor-Smartphones, dieses unterschied sich aber nur geringfĂŒgig. Damit ist es fast gleich groß wie das 4er-Modell und schwimmt gegen den Strom der immer grĂ¶ĂŸeren Smartphones. Das Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 richtet sich in erster Linie an gewerbliche Nutzer in Fabriken und Baustellen oder im Außendienst, die ein robustes und widerstandsfĂ€higes Handy brauchen, Privatnutzer bekommen es aber ebenso in ElektronikmĂ€rkten wie BLA. Was das kompakte Outdoor-Handy wirklich leistet und einstecken kann, zeigen wir im Test. Design Man fĂŒhlt sich um ein paar Jahre in die Vergangenheit versetzt, wenn man das Smartphone das erste Mal in der Hand hĂ€lt. Die Abmessungen des Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 sind fast identisch mit dem Xcover 4. Was die Optik angeht, Ă€hnelt es eher dem moderneren Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro Test. Mit einer GrĂ¶ĂŸe von 14,7 x 7,2 x 9,2 Zentimetern wirkt das neue Xcover 5 nahezu winzig verglichen mit heutigen Smartphones von Samsung oder anderer Hersteller. Damit ist es fast so klein wie das iPhone 12 – abgesehen vom dickeren GehĂ€use. Mit einem Gewicht von knapp ĂŒber 170 Gramm ist es zudem sehr leicht – vor allem fĂŒr ein Outdoor-Smartphone. Das Xcover 5 fĂŒhlt sich sehr filigran und handlich an, zumindest wenn man Smartphones weit jenseits der 6-Zoll-Marke gewohnt ist. Das Outdoor-GerĂ€t liegt sehr griffig und rutschfest in der Hand, was es den kleinen Rillen an den Seiten und den Riffelungen der RĂŒckseite zu verdanken hat. Die Kombination aus Kunststoff und dem leichten Gewicht sorgen allerdings dafĂŒr, dass das GerĂ€t nicht so robust wirkt, wie man es von einem Outdoor-Handy erwarten wĂŒrde. Der Eindruck tĂ€uscht allerdings, denn das Xcover 5 mit seinem weichen KunststoffgehĂ€use soll StĂŒrze auf den Fußboden aus bis zu 1,5 Meter Höhe ĂŒberstehen. Hierzu erfĂŒllt es neben IP68 auch den MIL-STD-810G-Standard der US-Armee. Gorilla Glass 6 schĂŒtzt zudem das Display. Die physischen Navigationsknöpfe vom VorgĂ€nger gibt es beim Xcover 5 nicht mehr – damit folgt es dem Design des Samsung Galaxy Xcover Pro Test. Umso auffĂ€lliger ist der große, programmierbare Xcover-Button auf der linken Seite des Smartphones. Auf der anderen Seite des Handys findet man wie gewohnt den Ein-/Ausschalter und die LautstĂ€rkewippe. Alle Tasten sitzen fest und bieten einen klar definierten Druckpunkt, wie man es von einem Outdoor-Smartphone erwarten wĂŒrde. Das Design ĂŒberzeugt uns rundum, auch wenn es noch etwas wertiger und robuster wirken könnte. Display Das Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 bietet ein LC-Display mit einer Diagonale von 5,3 Zoll. Die Auflösung liegt bei 1480 x 720 Pixel. Das ist tatsĂ€chlich enttĂ€uschend und entspricht nicht einmal einer Full-HD-Auflösung, sondern nur HD+. In Relation zu dem kleinen Bildschirm fĂŒhrt das zu einer Pixeldichte von 310 ppi. Das ist zwar noch ausreichend scharf, allerdings bieten hier mittlerweile Smartphones in dieser Preisklasse eine bessere Auflösung. Zudem umgibt das Display ein großer Rand, insbesondere oben und unten. Der Bildschirm fĂŒllt dadurch nur etwa 70 Prozent der Vorderseite aus. Grund ist hier unter anderem der Schutz vor mechanischen Einwirkungen wie SchlĂ€gen und StĂŒrzen. Verglichen mit anderen neuen Smartphones der Mittelklasse, wie dem Samsung Galaxy M21 Testbericht, wirkt das Display antiquiert. Die Bildwiederholrate von 60 Hz stellt zudem nur Standard-Kost dar. Farben und Kontraste sowie die BlickwinkelstabilitĂ€t gehen in Ordnung, setzen jetzt aber keine besonderen MaßstĂ€be. Das Galaxy Xcover 5 bietet eine erhöhte BerĂŒhrungsempfindlichkeit des Touch-Displays. Diese schaltet man auf Wunsch in den Einstellungen hinzu. Diese soll die Nutzung des Smartphones mit Handschuhen oder nassen Fingern erlauben, um einem möglichen Einsatz auf einer Baustelle oder in einer Lager- und Fabrikhalle gerecht zu werden. Im Test funktionierte das mit nassen Fingern und dĂŒnnen Arbeitshandschuhen einwandfrei, nicht aber mit dicken Winterhandschuhen. Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 Das Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 im Test Kamera Wie schon beim VorgĂ€nger kommt eine einzige Linse mit 16 Megapixel, einer f/​ mit Autofokus sowie Dual-LED-Blitz zum Einsatz. Videoaufnahmen sind bis 1080p bei ​30 fps möglich. Das lĂ€sst nichts Gutes erahnen, allerdings hat das Google Pixel 4a Testbericht bewiesen, dass auch Smartphones nur mit einer Linse hervorragende Fotos schießen können. Beim Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 trifft das weniger zu. Zwar wirken die Farben kraftvoll und lebendig – wie man es von Samsung gewohnt ist. Die BildschĂ€rfe lĂ€sst allerdings zu wĂŒnschen ĂŒbrig. Bei Tageslicht bieten die Bilder noch eine ausreichende Detailtiefe und SchĂ€rfe, die aber bei Dunkelheit mangels speziellem Nachtmodus stark nachlĂ€sst. Zudem ĂŒberzieht ein deutlicher Grauschleier die Aufnahmen bei hellen LichtverhĂ€ltnissen. FĂŒr gelegentliche SchnappschĂŒsse reicht die Kamera aus – aber nicht fĂŒr mehr. Die Einstellungsmöglichkeiten fĂŒr Fotos sind simpel Neben dem normalen Modus gibt es noch die Option „Pro“, die eine manuelle Anpassen der Belichtung oder des Weißabgleichs erlaubt. Ferner gibt es eine Funktion fĂŒr Panorama-Aufnahmen und einen Modus namens „Essen“ fĂŒr Fotos von Speisen oder anderen Objekten. Dabei wird die Mitte der Aufnahme besonders hervorgehoben, weniger die RĂ€nder und der Hintergrund. Die digitale Zoom-Funktion erlaubt eine bis zu zehnfache VergrĂ¶ĂŸerung, Aufnahmen wirken dann aber sehr pixelig. Die Frontkamera löst mit 5 Megapixel auf und dient vor allem fĂŒr gelegentliche Selfies oder Videokonferenzen. Ein PortrĂ€tmodus ist enthalten. Das dabei erzeugte Bokeh arbeiten aber recht unsauber, sodass Teile des Gesichts oder der BĂŒgel einer Brille ausgeblendet werden. Das Galaxy Xcover 5 erlaubt die Gesichtserkennung ĂŒber die Frontkamera. Diese funktioniert flott und tadellos, ist aber im Vergleich zu einer echten 3D-Erkennung oder anderen Methoden zur Entsperrung wie einer PIN oder einem Fingerabdruck vergleichsweise unsicher. Samsung hat den Chip fĂŒr Einsteiger-Smartphones entwickelt, große Leistungen sind nicht zu erwarten. Im Benchmark-Test PCmark Work kommen wir auf 5550 Punkte. Das ist nur ein unterdurchschnittlicher Wert. Das CAT S62 Pro Testbericht erreichte unter anderem knapp 5900 Punkte bei diesem Test, das Nokia Testbericht etwa 6000 Punkte. Verglichen mit einem Smartphone der oberen Mittelklasse wirkt das Xcover 5 entsprechend etwas trĂ€ge – fĂŒr den alltĂ€glichen Gebrauch bei der Arbeit reicht die Leistung aber aus. Mehr als Casual Games sind zum Spielen aber nicht drin. Das Smartphone bietet darĂŒber hinaus 64 GByte Speicherplatz und 4 GByte RAM. In dieser Preisklasse gehört das zum Standard, weniger sollte es auch nicht sein. Der Speicher ist ĂŒber eine Micro-SD-Karte auf bis zu 1 TByte erweiterbar. ZusĂ€tzlich dazu können zwei SIM-Karten parallel genutzt werden. Abgerundet wird die Ausstattung mit NFC, Bluetooth und WLAN Als AnschlĂŒsse kommen ein Type-C-Steckplatz mit USB sowie ein 3,5-Millimeter-Klinkenstecker zum Einsatz. ZusĂ€tzlich befindet sich ein Pogo-Pin-Connector am unteren Ende des Xcover 5 – das kommt selten vor bei Handys. Das erlaubt das Laden des Akkus ĂŒber eine spezielle Dockingstation, was den vordergrĂŒndig beruflichen Einsatzzweck des Xcover 5 nochmals untermauert. Der Xcover-Button auf der linken Seite des Smartphones erweist sich als sehr praktisches Feature. Anwender können dem Knopf zwei beliebige Funktionen zuweisen. So aktiviert man etwa die Taschenlampe durch ein kurzes DrĂŒcken oder startet die Kamera mit lĂ€ngerem Halten. Die grĂ¶ĂŸte StĂ€rke des Galaxy Xcover 5 dĂŒrfte das robuste GehĂ€use sein. Es ist nach IP68 zertifiziert und reiht sich damit bei den wasserdichten Smartphones ein. Das Handy ist gegen Eindringen von Staub geschĂŒtzt und ĂŒbersteht bis zu 30 Minuten in einer maximalen von 1,5 Metern – allerdings nur in SĂŒĂŸwasser. Im Test haben wir das GerĂ€t unter einem Wasserhahn abgespĂŒlt. Diese Prozedur ĂŒberstand das Handy ohne Probleme. Allerdings sollte man darauf achten, dass die abnehmbare Abdeckung auf der RĂŒckseite auch gut eingerastet ist. Die Nachahmung können wir aber nicht empfehlen, denn Samsung bietet keine GewĂ€hrleistung auf WasserschĂ€den. Solche EinschrĂ€nkungen können wir bei einem wasserdichten GerĂ€t nicht nachvollziehen – entweder es ist wasserdicht oder eben nicht. Sehr erfreulich ist die Software, hier hat Samsung mittlerweile seine Hausaufgaben gemacht. Kurz nach der Aktivierung spielt das Smartphone bereits ein Update auf Android 11 auf. Das Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 in der Enterprise Edition bieten aber auch HĂ€ndler an wie Saturn oder Mediamarkt an. Man kann das Outdoor-Smartphone also als Privatnutzer erwerben und profitiert dann zumindest von regelmĂ€ĂŸigen Sicherheitsupdates in den nĂ€chsten fĂŒnf Jahren. Akku Viele kennen es noch von frĂŒher Klappe ab, Akku raus. Das Samsung Galaxy Xcover 5 verfĂŒgt tatsĂ€chlich noch ĂŒber einen herausnehmbaren Akku. Sollte der Akku irgendwann nicht mehr richtig funktionieren, kann man ihn einfach austauschen – anstatt gleich das Smartphone zu wechseln oder viel Geld fĂŒr einen Akkuumbau durch eine Drittfirma auszugeben. Der Akku befindet sich unter eine Kunststoffabdeckung auf der RĂŒckseite, dort befinden sich auch die beiden Slots fĂŒr SIM- und Micro-SD-Karten. This comes just a day after another major leak revealed a great deal about the upcoming latest Galaxy Xcover 6 Pro comes courtesy of German publication WinFuture. It shows the phone in high-resolution renders, giving us a detailed look at its design. The build of the handset loudly screams a rugged smartphone. We have a sturdy frame with ridges on the edges as well as the back, making for a stronger grip.
